چکیده

Mobile computing is characterised by variations in user needs and in the computing and communication resources. We have developed a middleware centric approach for the development of software capable of dynamically adapting to such variations. The middleware leverages models of needs and resources and the adaptation capabilities of the software and performs context monitoring, adaptation planning and dynamic reconfiguration at runtime. In this paper we focus on the modelling of resources of a distributed mobile computing infrastructure and how the resource model is used in adaptation planning. We present a distributed resource management framework and mechanisms necessary to maintain an up to date resource model at runtime. The challenge is to balance the level of abstraction so as to hide some of the heterogeneity of the actual infrastructure while retaining sufficient detail to serve the needs of distributed and centralized adaptation planning. The proposed framework is illustrated through a running

Managing Transactions on Replicated Content Going Mobile

Mobile databases are a centerpiece of the dramatic growth of data-centric applications for mobile computing, nomadic communication and wireless networks. Replication of database content is useful in client-server and peerto-peer configurations of mobile distributed databases. We present an adaptation of generalized snapshot isolation for transactions on content data in mobile networks. This sol...

Constraining Architectural Reflection for Safely Managing Adaptation

Architecture evolution is typically a requirement of modern and pervasive software systems. In particular, distributed applications, such as digital libraries and learning systems, due to their interactive and ubiquitous nature, experience contextual forces that induce the need for secure adaptation solutions. Hence, the need for flexible component models that are able to cope with the plethora...

System Support for Mobile Distributed Applications

With the widespread use of distributed systems on one hand and the rapid deployment of mobile computing and communication infrastructure on the other, it becomes important to link both technologies together. This paper first outlines new problems arising from distributed mobile computing and then presents a software support architecture and system for mobile applications. We then discuss a syst...

Reflective Middleware for Location-Aware Application Adaptation

Today mobile computing is pervasively taking over the traditional desktop computing. Mobile devices are characterized by abrupt and unannounced changes in execution context. The applications running on these devices need to be autonomous and thus dynamically adapt according to the changing context. Existing middleware support for the typical distributed applications is strictly based on compone...

Fine-Grain Adaptation Using Context Information

In this research, I explore how distributed applications can achieve fine-grain adaptation in a mobile environment. I put forth the thesis that this can be achieved by exploiting context information, and support the idea with two applications: browsing the web on a mobile device, and continuous remote health monitoring of individuals.
